Discussion - Representation

Tide:

In the tide advertisement, the mother says that she wishes tide did not work as well as it does so she could throw out the little girl's clothing away. However, Tide is so good that it got all of the crayon stains out, not letting her do so. This advertisement for the detergent is targeted more towards children since it talks about getting a child's clothing clean from crayon stains. The ad can still aply to people of all ages since people can still stain their clothes often from food or dirt. Tide is a detergent that is high quality, so it is likely that not any social class can purchase it, so more wealthy people probably benefit from this advertsement.

AXE:

The advertisement for this Axe body spray targets men. More specifically, the ad is probably trying to get a hold of men that are above age 20, as there are many females chasing the fragrance. The body spray is affordable for many people, making the audience of men be able to afford the product. The audience also must take this as a joke, since women obviously are not going to be chasing over a man over his scent, however they are implying that the quality of the smell is great.

 Science Fiction

When thinking about science fiction, whats the first thing to come to mind? Aliens taking over? Maybe even Star Wars? Better known as Sci-Fi, science fiction is a genre of movies that have an appeal to imagination, and usually lots of special effects. Sci-fi movies are not limited to things out of this world. For example, although there may be some movies with extraneous settings, some take place on earth with super heroes and villains or even futuristic technology. Science fiction can demonstrate the dangerous nature of our human knowledge.

Content:

Art direction plays a very large role when it comes to making science fiction films. The art is used to immerse the viewers into this new world that the characters in the movie are in. Good arts and props will cause for the film to seem more believable to the viewers.

EX: The film Gattaca used very sleek and retro-futuristic looking architecture, using art direction nicely by creating this place that people would view as non-existent but very astonishing.

Production Techniques:

A technique used in sci-fi movies is that of color tones. The use of color tones can make a place seem unsettling or calming, depending on the color hue. for a cooler color hue with colors such as blue and purple can cause an uncomfortable feeling in the viewers. Harsh colors such as darker browns can also give off a feeling of uncomfortableness.

EX: The film Mad Max is an exhilerating film that uses many red colors, which causes a sort of adrenaline rush throughout the film as the decay of life continues.

Marketing:

Science fiction films are directed towards a variety of different age groups from as young as 5 years of age up to as high as 40. Young kids get intrested in science fiction films that take place in outer space, such as Star Wars. This can also get the atention of adolescents and adults, as there is no age barier when it comes to these types of movies. Many Science fiction movies can be family friendly, with toys for youngsters or even clothing to show off the films.

Samples:

Another Earth

The film Another Earth is a modern science fiction movie that was filmed in 2011. The movie focuses on the main character, Rhoda Marling, who has had many consequences from one terrible mistake that she made in the past. The film tries to give us the concept or thought of what we would say to another version of ourselves, as Earth 2 begins to near with an unescapable action of Rhoda. Although the movie does not tell us what would happen if we were to see another version of ourselves, we still get to feel the anxiety and emotions that would come with this coming true. This film uses the lighting and color techniques mentioned, in order to set the mood.

A.I Artificial Intelligence

A.I. Artificial Intelligence is a science fiction film created in 2001. The movie is about a boy who is actually a robot, but he is far from looking like one. In fact, he looks identical to human. The boy is abandoned by his human "parents" who are his masters. He then proceeds to search for what his real purpose is in the world. The movie's unsettling props and realistic art direction makes this movie seem very realistic.

Hi, my name is Ryan. I am creating this blog in order to complete the Cambridge Portfolio project. This is my first year taking AICE classes, and although the classes have their challenges, I can't say that it has been as difficult as I had assumed it would be. I am taking AICE Mediastudies, Spanish Lang, General Paper, and Psychology. I am happy to see myself at this level of courses in my junior year of highschool, and it will be a challenge along the way. Next year I plan on taking three more AICE courses in order to recieve the AICE Diploma, along with a Bright Futures scholarship. I am excited to see my progress until the end of this school year, and until the end of my senior year. I will update my progress along the way here!
