Portfolio Project - Research

I have been looking into many different types of sports film openings. It is quite difficult to come up with a planned out film opening at the moment. I have been watching a couple of gymnastics film openings, and I got an idea from one of them to show the daily life of the gymnast with a competition upcoming, and then the athlete gets injured very badly. Will the athlete have enough time to recover before the competition? One big title film I have put research into is called Full Out, which shows a girl who is in women's gymnastics, gets injured in a car accident and then her recovery from it. This is the same path I would like to take, however with a different type of injury. If I do not take that path, then I think I will show the gymnast's training leading up to a big competition. It will show the athlete working hard, with the coach training him harshly.

Portfolio Project - Technical Elements

Technical elements are important in giving the film the correct selection of scenery, costumes, sounds, lights, etc. The scenery is going to be in a gym where the athletes train. This will show the normal environment of a gymnast's gym. The costumes will be average training gym clothing along with competition attire when the athletes are competing. Lighting will change depending on the mood of the scene. When it is more relaxed it will be brighter, and if it is quite an active scene, the lighting will dim a bit. Sounds will be created using the Foley method. They will be prerecorded, and edited into the final video.

Portfolio Project - Plot Aspects

The film opening is firstly going to introduce the exposition of the film. This will introduce the main characters to the audience and demonstrate what their lives are about. Then the rising action will also be included into the film opening, to get the viewers interested in the film. This should make them want to see more, and they will eventually go to watch the film in theaters when it is released.

Portfolio Project - Characters

In the film opening, there are going to be two or three main characters who will be athletes. These athletes are going to be competing against each other. There will also be a coach who will be supporting athletes. Lastly, the audience will either be a real audience, or teammates cheering them on at a competition.

Portfolio Project - Genre

The most appropriate genre for the film is debated between a drama, and an action movie. These two make sense for this type of movie because there is a lot of stress that comes into this sport to prepare for competitions, along with mentality of the athletes for new skills. An action movie would also be suitable, since the sport of trampoline and tumbling is an extreme sport. I am going to take the route of making the film opening an action movie. I believe that there will bring more interest to the film opening by showing the actual competing and action part of the sport rather than the drama of it which takes place between athletes and coaches. The opening will be very competitive based.

Portfolio Project - Approach

Approaching the beginning of the project, I am considering all of my options. What can I do to make this project simpler? With the use of my sport for the main topic of the film opening, it will be easy to get filmed clips and auditory effects, since I will have the available tools at my gym. I have a trampoline, gymnasts to record (including myself), and other tools such as what I will record with. I have plenty of time at practice to record scene for this film, so I believe this is definitely the route I am going to take for this project.

Portfolio Project - Introduction

I am quite thrilled to have the opportunity to create my own film opening for this project. Using the techniques learned throughout the school-year, I plan to create a film that surrounds my sport, gymnastics. Since I have many competitions and train daily, this would be a great opportunity for clips. I am a trampolinist, so there are many cool angles I could utilize when recording videos for the opening.

Music Marketing Project - Kryptonics Design Process

Research

To begin this project, our group did research on our genre, which was pop. The pop genre is a very popular type of music currently. We began by looking for different types of music production companies which included artists in the pop genre. By the end of our research, we concluded that the two best production companies were Sony Music Entertainment, and Warner Music Group. These companies, very similar, had featured pop artists that were very popular among today’s music culture, resulting in our choice. We then researched as to how a few of the artists promoted their music and distributed it. The results were similar amongst them all, however some had different techniques in marketing their music.

Planning

Throughout our planning, our group tried to think of ways we could convey the message of the song. It was very difficult to, therefore we thought it would be best to make a promo video for the song. We organized how the music video would be recorded, picking places as well as who would be playing what instruments in the band.

Production

By meeting at the Weston Regional Park, we had a cameraman handy along with all of the props we needed to record. We began shooting clips of the music video and did each scene about 2-3 times each. This was done to ensure the best quality video would be produced into the final product. We rotated where we would record about 4 times, for different scenery throughout the music video. For lighting, car headlights were used along with the built-in iPhone camera flashlight. Once we captured all of the needed footage, we reviewed our planning to make sure we had covered everything we needed.

Post-Production

After the recording had all been finished, the editing was completed the day after to make sure all footage would line up with the music. The editing process included using some of the same clips over again at certain parts where the musical lyrics were repeated. Lining up the music with the lips of the singer, Alejandro Stoler, was made simple by having him lip sync to the music throughout the recording. Once the raw editing was finished, a few aftereffects were added to the end of the video to show the band picture along with the names of the participants.

Presentation

Our presentation was done by rotating group members for each slide. We read our script off of our screen as there was not much elaboration from the text on screen. The information showed what our marketing ideas were along with our inspirations from the Sony Music Entertainment and Warner music group. The video was shown at the end of the presentation.

This project helped me understand how difficult producing a music video really is. Marketing strategies must also be created elaborately, in order to gain mass views for the music group. The design process helped me understand what these artists known today had to go through to begin their careers as well. Overall, I enjoyed making this project with my group.
